Di Indonesia, Islam merupakan agama terbesar. Karena paling besar, muncul beberapa golongan yang ingin menjadikan Indonesia sebagai negara Islam. Menurut mereka, dunia akan lebih baik jika Islam menjadi negara. Lalu, bagaimana dengan mereka yang berbeda agama seperti misalnya Hindu-Budha yang dari nenek moyangnya memang sudah menganut ajaran tersebut. Apakah negara Islam akan mengusir mereka atau memaksa mereka untuk memeluk agama Islam. Bagi saya, Islam yang seperti itu kurang ajar dan tidak tahu sopan santun. Tidak beretika. Sebab sebelum Islam masuk ke Indonesia (nusantara), mereka dihargai dan dihormati oleh pribumi. Kemudian setelah besar malah menindas.

Menurut Muhammad Natsir dalam tulisannya yang bertajuk Pandji Islam (1940), negara bukanlah tujuan, melainkan hanyalah alat untuk mewujudkan ajaran-ajaran Islam. Rasulullah sendiri pernah bersabda kalau beliau diutus oleh Allah SWT. untuk tujuan menyempurnakan akhlak manusia dan bukan untuk mendirikan negara Islam atau lembaga semacamnya. Artinya, di zamannya Nabi, Islam datang sebagai solusi dan petunjuk bagi orang-orang jahiliyah bahwa ternyata mereka dalam berkehidupan sudah melampaui batas-batas kemanusiaan. Maka dari itu Islam datang atas nama kemanusiaan.

Masalahnya hari ini, terutama di Indonesia, Islam bukannya menjadi solusi dari setiap problem kehidupan tapi malah dibikin masalah karena perbedaan pendapat. Semakin ke sini rasa-rasanya Islam yang dulunya mudah dan simple seperti dibuat rumit oleh generasi ke generasi. Orang semakin bingung dengan Islam sebab banyaknya perbedaan interpretasi ini. Yang awalnya dulu para penyebar Islam ingin menambah para pemeluknya sebanyak mungkin, tapi sekarang seolah ingin mereduksi para pemeluknya dengan mengklaim mereka kafir kalau ada yang tidak sesuai dengan interpretasi ajaran Islam yang mereka yakini.

Melihat Indonesia yang pluralis ini, Islam harus menjadi contoh bagi agama lain dalam tata cara beragama yang baik. Lebih banyak menunjukkan pengaplikasian terhadap semua ajaran-ajaran Islam dalam kehidupan sehari-hari dari pada sibuk menggembor-gemborkan bahwa Islam itu adalah agama yang paling benar di muka bumi. Bila perlu ketika seseorang melihat orang berbuat baik dan memuliakan manusia lain, orang lain melihat itu sebagai Islam. Bagi saya, itu adalah sebuah prestasi bahwa Islam berhasil sebagai agama yang rahmatan lil alamin.

Indonesia hari ini terlalu sibuk mempermasalahkan hal-hal kecil yang sebenarnya tidak penting untuk diperdebatkan seperti mengatur cara berpakaian. Ini negara bukan rumah tangga yang berantam masalah baju apa yang ingin dipakai buat kondangan. Negara punya tanggung jawab merangkul 17.504 pulau dan mengurus 270.054.853 manusia. Ini bukan main-main. Masih banyak hal-hal yang urgent seperti kemiskinan, kelaparan, ketidakadilan, dan segala bentuk penindasan terhadap manusia.

Anehnya, sebagian besar pejabat negara beragama Islam. Ini berarti ajaran Islam cuma sebatas ceramah dan khutbah. Sedangkan pengaplikasiannya nonsense. Mereka seperti dibutakan dengan kepentingan dunia yang sesaat. Maka benar yang dikatakan Prof. Salim Said saat di acara Indonesia Lawyer Club, bahwa para pemimpin Indonesia adalah para pelanggar sumpah sampai Tuhan saja tidak ditakuti.

Dengan ini, perlu me-rethinking pemahaman kita tentang Islam dan jangan hanya dipandang sebagai agama semata. Islam lebih dari itu, Islam itu harus kita maknai secara komprehensif. Sekarang ini, masyarakat muslim Indonesia cenderung menghakimi umat agama lain ataupun umat muslim lainnya dengan pemahaman yang dangkal. Menurut Budayawan Indonesia, Emha Ainun Nadjib, kondisi ini terlihat pasca-aksi damai 212 lalu, dimana terjadi pengotak-kotakan antara mereka yang ikut atau tidak ikut dalam demonstrasi tersebut. Mereka yang tidak ikut dianggap bukan muslim atau masuk dalam kelompok nasionalis, sedangkan mereka yang nasionalis dianggap bukan Islam.

Perilaku seperti ini juga dinilai berkontribusi terhadap citra masyarakat muslim dan Islam di mata internasional yang dianggap brutal. Padahal Islam adalah tenaga di pikiran dan cahaya di hati. Jika itu dipahami dan diterapkan dengan baik maka Islam sebagai rahmatan lil alamin dapat tercapai. Padahal, dalam ajaran Islam yang ada di Al-quran, isinya 3,5 persen akidah, 96,5 persen adalah ibadah muamalah. Kebanyakan masyarakat muslim sendiri terpaku pada 3,5 persen itu dan kadang-kadang tanpa pengetahuan dan pemahaman yang kuat.
Islam adalah untuk seluruh umat dan alam semesta, seharusnya umat Islam menunjukkan kepada umat lain kepada kebenaran dengan cara-cara yang baik terutama di Indonesia. Mengajak ke yang benar itu pakai cara persuasif sehingga orang akan simpati dan senang seperti yang dilakukan oleh Nabi Muhammad SAW. bukannya sibuk menghakimi muslim yang lain dengan sesat dan kafir.
